Salted With Fire Nancy LaRonda Johnson 9780615832333 Books Reviews
I love writing flash fiction myself - that is, fiction under 1,000 words. In "Salted With Fire", Johnson has combined fifteen flash fiction stories with twelve poems, which show her journey from writing for the mere joy of writing to writing stories that highlight God's will, even when the story itself is not religious in nature.
Some of the stories have very surprising endings, such as Secondary Illness, Career Day, Freeway, and The X'es Marked The Spots. Some of the stories are more "slice of life", such as Sometimes You Get Shot, Debt, and Taxi. At the end of each story is a biblical discussion about what the story means in terms of the Bible.
The poetry is short, and written from the heart, in first person format. The poems are interesting gateways into the mind and soul of the author.
All of the work here is driven by heart, and by a firm belief in God. The author is not afraid to make use of the five senses, and a full range of emotions to drive her stories.
Salted With Fire by Nancy LaRonda Johnson is a story of a journey outer world to inner world. Flash fiction and the twelve poems in the book are gripping and soul-searching. It is about transformation of personal to universal. Deft presentation of twists, humor, drama, compassion and horror makes this book unique. This book is highly motivating and inspiring. Creative and spiritual power of author Nancy LaRonda Johnson makes this book unique. I recommend it to everyone.
A wonderful collection of poetry and prose which is spiritually uplifting.
As we travel alongside the author on this transformational journey, and we are allowed a peek inside that private and innermost part of her being, I must say that I admire the honesty and conviction which is revealed in these pieces.
Some of my favorites from this collection include a story about a father who rescues his daughter, a short piece based on Popeye, and a poem entitled "The Ocean Blue." The to-the-point flash pieces were entertaining and the poetry was beautiful. I like how this book is spiritual and uplifting, and I'd like to read more from this author.
This is a comprehensive collection of scenarios told in the form of short stories with ties to mini discussions about faith. Interspersed throughout the book are soul-searching poems that take a look at the meaning of life events. I especially liked the poem entitled "Birthdays" which is told from the perspective of an old person who does not want to be reminded of his or her age. It is written with spunk and honesty. Very cute! I enjoyed the poems more than the stories; however, I thought it was clever how the author took every day social issues/ occurrences and wove them into stories with faith reflections afterward. Some of the topics include gambling, violence, responsibility, death, etc. The strength of the book are the poems and the personal reflections.
“Salted With Fire” describes a spiritual journey. The author has created some modern day parables that illustrate the connection between life’s trials and those described in the Bible. The flash fiction and poetry touches on a myriad of subjects. Ghosts, mental illness, greed, murder, adultery, and even public speaking are a sampling of the topics throughout this thought provoking book. Her relationship with God is apparent throughout her writing. I loved the tale of the Funambulist. “Like Swimming in the Ocean” is one of several beautifully written poems. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed “Salted With Fire.”
God says in His Word that all instruction we need for life we can find in the books of the Bible. Ms. Johnson in Salted with Fire does just that.
A collection of short stories and poems, Salted with Fire, wraps lessons from the Bible around everyday events. While I am not one who knows a lot, or understands, poetry, I found Ms. Johnson's poetry well-written and very enjoyable. I "got" what she was saying and could "feel" the meaning behind the words, they actually prompted an emotional connection in me. Her short stories were good and I especialy enjoyed, "You Are Not Going to Believe This." The stories relayed a message and Johnson added a Discussion with each, finding a link to situations in the stories to life lessons from the Bible. Johnson is well versed in God's Word and added the discussions without being preachy.
My only complaint would be that with the eBook formatting some of the pictures went askew obscuring the words to the stories and poems.
I enjoyed Johnson's work very much, she is a talented writer with much creativity. I look forward to reading another book by this author, Anticipation of the Penitent.
